The recent study by Dong and colleagues adds to our knowledge about the essential roles that UHRF1 plays in vivo. Already recognized as a jack of all trades, this study establishes UHRF1 as a master regulator of epigenetic pathways during male germ cell development. Importantly, the observed infertility phenotype is highly relevant to human male reproduction as genetic polymorphisms in the human UHRF1 gene have been associated with oligospermia.
